Black History Month Exhibit

January 8, 2025 @ 9:00 am - February 20, 2025 @ 5:00 pm

An exhibit focused on the power of shared history is on display at the Cultural Arts Center of Douglasville/ Douglas County (CAC) in honor of Black History Month from January 8 – February 20, 2025, Monday – Friday 9 am – 5 pm.

The fable of the Sankofa bird explores the power of ancestral history to inform our sense of self and to guide our path to the future. In the narrative, Sankofa, the most beautiful bird in her village, leaves her home only to find that the birds in the neighboring villages find her bold colors and sassy attitude ugly and strange. Sankofa returns to her village, bullied and broken, and cries to her people that they lied to her by telling her she was beautiful and her ways were admirable when everyone outside of the village says that she is ugly and odd. Her people heal her spirit through the symbolic presentation of a golden egg that holds their shared history.  When placed in Sankofa’s mouth, the ancestral memories within the egg give her back her self-worth and voice. Forever after that, Sankofa holds the egg in her mouth and looks back to her history to strengthen her and guide her.
